What is igusa?🌱 It is the soft rush grass behind What is igusa?🌱

It is the soft rush grass behind every tatami mat, woven into Japanese floors for over a thousand years. Not manufactured, not synthetic. Simply grown, dried, and woven by hand.

The finest igusa comes from Kyushu, where clean water and clear air produce a denser, more supple grass. And it does quite work once it is in a room: it helps clean the air, balances humidity through the seasons, and ages from soft green to warm gold rather than wearing out.

In a world of fast, synthetic things, igusa is the opposite. Natural, renewable, and made to be lived with.

This bathroom was designed to slow everything down This bathroom was designed to slow everything down.

Natural oak, stone, and soft light work together to create a quiet, grounded atmosphere.

The goal wasn’t just a beautiful bathroom. It was to create a daily ritual, a place that feels calm the moment you step in.

Before & After A lower centre of gravity to groun Before & After

A lower centre of gravity to ground it. Darker wood to anchor it. Soft layers to quiet the edges.

And then stopping before it becomes too much.

As a designer, that last part matters most. Knowing when the space has said enough.
